Food Not Cuts: an exhibition on disability, food access, and care

Food Not Cuts: an exhibition on disability, food access, and care

Press Release

On Friday 27th June Food Not Cuts will open at the Food Museum. It is an exhibition and immersive sound installation curated by Anahita Harding, Curatorial Fellow with Curating Visibility funded by Arts Council England and Art Fund.

The exhibition highlights the lived experiences of disabled people as they navigate barriers to food and cooking, and how cuts to care hours have impacted disabled people when it comes to food.

The exhibition is centred around a sound installation that brings together voices from a group of co-producers who each have lived experience of disability as well as voices from the Ace Anglia group in Stowmarket. These conversations were captured during a cooking workshop with adapted kitchen tools.

The installation features objects from the Museum’s collection as well as works by artists Elora Kadir, Em—Dash, and Roo Dhissou. Through an intersectional lens, the works explore disability alongside cultural identity, and the social dimensions of food.

Delivered in partnership with Screen South’s Accentuate Programme, Curating Visibility is a work placement scheme for deaf, disabled and neurodivergent curators. Working with 6 museum partners across England, the Curating Visibility Fellows are uncovering museum collections and reimagining disability perspectives.
