We are super excited to announce that student journalist extraordinaire Yolanda Barker will be attending the Wilderness Festival this weekend with the incredible support of Festival Spirit. Thanks to Ability Today, Yolanda and her husband will be enjoying the full festival experience.
Festival Spirit is a remarkable charity that makes it possible for people with life-limiting illnesses or disabilities to attend and enjoy festivals, something they might not typically have the opportunity to do. The charity ensures that all necessary facilities and support are in place, from profiling beds to accessible campsites, and even buddies to assist attendees around the site.
Yolanda shared her anticipation and expressed some nervousness for the weekend but felt reassured by the comprehensive support from Festival Spirit.
Yolanda is eager to immerse herself in the diverse offerings of the Wilderness Festival, here’s a glimpse into Yolanda’s festival preparation:
“My glitter tattoos are packed along with the sun cream and a raincoat. Not forgetting a blanket, of course. I am looking forward to a relaxing and exciting opportunity to participate in the Wilderness Festival whilst utilising the skills I have learnt through my NCTJ Journalism course with the Academy for Disabled Journalists. Having never been to a festival before, it’s a little nerve-wracking. However, I am reassured that Festival Spirit will enable me to make the most of the weekend by providing extra support such as a profiling bed and accessible campsite. They even offer buddies to help you around the site too.”
“From dance music, comedy, activities, food and a lake! Will I be brave enough to attempt to get in (and out) of the lake? I fully intend to slip back to my late teens allowing the music to consume me. I must confess I didn’t recognise many names but having tested the waters on YouTube, I know I am in for a treat. For a quieter time, there are poets and speakers, crafts and meditation. How I am going to plan my weekend remains to be seen, but it will be crammed full of exciting new experiences. Now to look at the weather forecast!”
Festival Spirit is passionate about helping people who never thought they could attend a festival, ensuring they have the facilities, support, and necessary care for their condition and brings the equipment and accommodation, while attendees bring and share the festival spirit.
We wish Yolanda and her husband a fantastic time at the Wilderness Festival and look forward to hearing all about their adventures!
Stay tuned for updates from Yolanda’s festival experience with more pictures of Yolanda and her glitter tattoos coming soon!
