Dr. Julie McElroy: Pioneering Female Frame Runner Set to Make History at the 2024 London Marathon

Julie Mceloy

In an incredible journey of determination and resilience, Dr. Julie McElroy, a remarkable athlete with cerebral palsy, is set to achieve yet another milestone in her extraordinary sporting career. Julie, a member of the Victoria Park Athletics Club and a passionate advocate for adaptive sports, will compete in the 2024 London Marathon.

Julie’s journey to this momentous event began with her dedication to adaptive sports, particularly frame running and seated throws. Born with cerebral palsy, she faced unique challenges throughout her life. Six years ago, a traumatic accident could have deterred anyone, but not Julie. Her indomitable spirit drove her to reclaim her passion for sports.

Two years ago, she was introduced to coach Gordon Innes through the Victoria Park Athletics Club. Together, they embarked on a rigorous training regimen tailored to her needs. Frame Running, an adaptive sport that allows individuals with mobility challenges to run using specially designed frames, became one of Julie’s passions. Seated Throws, encompassing events like shot put, discus, and javelin, became another area where she excelled.

Julie’s commitment to pushing her boundaries was evident earlier this year when she participated in the Paisley 10K race, completing it in an impressive 57 minutes. Her determination serves as a testament to the power of the human spirit to overcome adversity. Julie’s remarkable journey also led her to the world of parkrun in September 2022. Intrigued by the inclusivity and sense of community, she joined the Victoria Park Parkrun. It was here that she found a supportive and encouraging community of fellow runners, reinforcing the belief that parkrun truly is for everyone, regardless of fitness level or ability.

In April 2023, Julie took on the challenge of the Glasgow Kiltwalk, raising funds for the Victoria Park Athletics Club, which holds charity status. She conquered an impressive 22 miles on her specialist Frame Runner, starting at Glasgow Green and finishing at Balloch, Loch Lomond. Her participation not only showcased her athletic prowess but also her commitment to giving back to the community that has supported her.

Now, Julie is poised to make history by becoming the first participant on a Frame Runner to compete in the Great Scottish Half Marathon on October 1, 2023. This event, held annually in Glasgow.

Looking forward, Julie McElroy’s sights are set on the 2024 London Marathon, where she aims to inspire others with her extraordinary journey. Her story serves as an inspiration to all, proving that with determination and resilience, one can overcome even the most challenging circumstances.
