Spain’s national football team has once again triumphed over England’s Three Lions, marking their 11th victory in 28 encounters since their first meeting in May 1929. That inaugural friendly in Madrid ended in a 4-3 win for Spain, setting the stage for a historic rivalry. This latest victory, however, is particularly momentous as it secures Spain their fourth UEFA European Championship (Euros) title, making them the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.
Spain’s journey to Euros glory began in 1964 with Marcelino’s header sealing a 2-1 win over the Soviet Union. They clinched their second title in 2008 with a 1-0 victory against Germany, and their third in 2012, thrashing Italy 4-0. These triumphs were part of a golden era for Spanish football, which also included winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup, giving Spain three consecutive major tournament victories.
UEFA EURO 2024, held in Germany, saw Spain competing in Group C, where they dominated Italy, Croatia, and Albania. Under the guidance of former player Luis de la Fuente Castillo and with Álvaro Morata as captain, Spain advanced through the knockout stages with decisive wins over Georgia (4-1), Germany (2-1), and France (2-1), culminating in a 2-1 victory over England in the final.
This final marked the third European Championship meeting between Spain and England. The first was in the 1980 group stage, where England won 2-1. Spain, however, has enjoyed recent success against England, including victories in the UEFA Nations League (2-3 and 1-2) and a 2-2 draw in an international friendly in November 2016.
Spain’s flawless performance in the group stages and their World Cup victory in 2010 solidify their reputation as a formidable force in international football.
