Dane Cross was studying to be a physical education teacher when a freak accident changed his world forever.
The then-21-year-old was playing touch football in his university competition when he dove to score a try and “ran into my defender’s legs”.
Cross fractured his C5 vertebrae and was declared quadriplegic, marking the beginning of a lengthy rehabilitation journey.
The Sunshine Coast resident says the 2001 accident was not the end of his world, and instead led him on a different path as he learned more about advocacy and accessibility for people with disability.
