A few dark, flat birthmarks on Nikkita Dane’s skin were the first sign of the life-long diagnosis she received as a child. Then she found the same marks on her own children decades later.
Nikkita was diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) when she was seven years old after a paediatrician spotted a series of “cafe au lait” birthmarks on her skin.
They’re one of the most common signs of NF1; people with the condition always have six or more of these birthmarks, which are always present before the age of five.
