The Chase’s Anne Hegerty has opened up about the secret battle with autism that left her on benefits and with bailiffs knocking on her door.
Anne, 59, from Wood Green, North London, was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome, which is a form of autism, in 2005 after seeing a TV programme about autism and realising she had all of the symptoms.
It took two years for Anne, who is a Chaser on the ITV quiz show, to get a diagnosis for the syndrome, which ended up costing her a job in proofreading.
One of the symptoms of autism is having the inability to multi-task, which led to Anne under-performing at work and eventually losing her job.
Appearing on ITV’s Loose Women today, Anne admitted she went on benefits after two bailiffs arrived within ten minutes of each other on New Year’s Day 2008.
She also showed off the results of a brand new makeover, which was a far cry from her frumpy grey Governess costume for The Chase.
