Nurses and other health professionals should be given routine awareness training around deafness to help better support patients and colleagues with the condition, a nurse who was born with severe to profound hearing loss has urged.
Samantha Penney, a staff nurse working in Milton Keynes, has told Nursing Times of the challenges of working as a nurse with deafness and has highlighted the need for further action to ensure nursing is an inclusive profession for those with disabilities.
Ms Penney relies heavily on her other senses such as her sight, smell and touch to make up for her lack of hearing. She also wears hearing aids.
