Living with fibromyalgia: ‘I’m like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz – needing a bit of oil now and again’ – iNews

In 2017, I experienced traumatic events. The first was having to undergo major surgery and the second was the suicide of a very dear friend of mine, at which I was the first responder. It’s a fallacy that after working in the NHS for 33 years, and seeing all manner of things, that you are prepared for these types of events.

My fibromyalgia – a long-term condition that causes pain all over the body – kicked in about the third month after surgery… also the third month after the impact of grieving my friend. I started having non-specific symptoms, seeing my GP with pain all over my body.

One day I was fine, the next day I wondered what was going on. I felt as if I had been on a marathon.
