‘I want to work – but employers don’t give people with disabilities like me a chance’ — Birmingham Live

A Birmingham warehouse worker who was unemployed for more than twenty years has called on more businesses to hire people with learning disabilities saying ‘people like me want to work.’ Manjit, a warehouse assistant at community equipment provider Medequip, was found a job by PURE project which supports vulnerable adults into work and training.

Speaking at an PURE project learning disabilities event, Manjit said it was ‘unfair’ that many people like him couldn’t find work. According to Mencap, just 5.1% of adults with a learning disability known to their local authority in England are in paid work.

PURE Project is a £20m initiative to support people facing complex barriers into education. Manjit said he had become ‘much more confident’ since starting his new role in 2021.
