Diabetic rugby player hoping to inspire health management – Northwich Guardian

A TYPE 2 diabetic rugby player is being featured in a healthy eating campaign.

Dan Millington, 28, is one of seven people featured in the Diabetes UK led ‘food you love’ campaign, and will be a showcasing how he has not let living with the condition stand between him and food.

The charity hopes the recipe tips will inspire more people to make changes that can make a big difference in how they manage their diabetes.

Dan was diagnosed in 2010 after noticing he had lost weight and had been feeling increasingly tired and thirsty.

He will be showcasing green masala fish curry and is one of several people being featured.

Dan, a Tesco delivery driver said: “It can be a daunting prospect at first but there is lot of advice available and an incredible network of people who are willing to help and support you.

“Diabetes isn’t about do’s and don’ts, it is about moderation and balance.”

Since being diagnosed he has lost 5 ½ stone through lifestyle changes, and still enjoys playing rugby for his local team.

Dan no longer needs medication to manage his condition and is able to keep on top of his diabetes through regular exercise and dieting.

Stephen Ryan, head of the North at Diabetes UK, said: “Enjoying what you eat is one of life’s pleasure, but when it comes to healthy eating, sometimes we all need a bit of inspiration.

“Every day we get questions from people living with diabetes asking for advice from our experts about what they can or can’t eat.

“We hope these recipes for the food we love, only healthier, are a practical answer.

“I hope Dan’s story will inspire people living with diabetes to don their chef’s hat and try one of these healthy and delicious meals.”

4.5 million people in the UK have diabetes, of which 1 million have the type 2 condition but don’t know they have it because they haven’t been diagnosed.
