The other day, I was sitting on the train, heading to Downtown LA, when my phone buzzed. I looked down and saw I had an alert from someone needing my help. I’d signed up as a volunteer with the Be My Eyes(Opens in a new window) app, so I knew someone with a visual impairment needed me to “see” something and describe it to them. I took the video call and, as instructed from the welcome notes, I’d received on signing up, I said “Hey, I’m glad you called. How can I help?”
The caller said her niece had dropped off some groceries, but hadn’t had time to tell her exactly what was in the bags. There were several items she couldn’t identify from touch alone, so she needed someone to describe them. “Absolutely, can you show them to me?” I responded.
She held her phone in the direction of the kitchen table. I asked her to move the phone a little to the left so I could see the items in full view. I told her what they were and she laughed, “Oh, right. I forgot I requested that, thank you!” We went through a few other mystery packages, and then she said: “The mail just arrived, could you tell who one of the letters is from, if I get it from my study?”
