Down Syndrome charity to open permanent café and gallery in Leeds following successful trial – Leeds Live

A charity that helps youngsters in Leeds with Down Syndrome to forge a pathway into work is opening a brand new coffee shop and gallery in Headingley.

Sunshine & Smiles is run entirely by parents of children with Down Syndrome and offers support to families across Yorkshire.

In March 2018, the charity ran a pop-up trial to see whether a permanent café would be viable – and they have now secured a six-month lease at the Arndale Centre in Headingley, which could be extended for even longer if it’s successful.

The new branch of Café 21 will offer 16-24 year olds the opportunity to gain vital skills under one-to-one supervision from the charity’s volunteers, from making coffees to customer service relations. Employees will even be offered the chance to undertake formal qualifications.
